How Hard is a Computer Science Degree

I decided to try some computer science classes to see how they were. Computers were so important in our society that I figured I should know a little bit about them. In addition, I had always been fascinated by the idea of programming computers. I have had very little experience besides a bit of rudimentary BASIC when I was a kid, but I knew that I was up to the challenge.

Once I took a class, I became obsessed with computer science. I took another class and then another. Soon, it was hard to fit in all my requirements between all of the computer science classes I was taking. Sooner or later, I had to admit to myself: I was hooked. A degree was now the only thing that made any sense to me.

In the school I was enrolled at, there were lots of people getting computer science degrees at the time. I think the freshman class was on the order of a thousand people or more. As a result, the department tried to cut down on the number of entrants by making the courses harder. This is pretty common practice. In some subject areas, they made everything very easy to attract more people.

In other ones, they made everything very difficult to weed out the weakest candidates. At one point, I wasn't even sure I would be able to make it. Maybe getting a degree would be too hard for me. Nonetheless, I resolved to stick with it. I knew that it was worth the effort to get the degree.

When I graduated with a computer science degree, I couldn't have been more pleased. It was nice to be able to do something that would make me a good bit of money while still allowing me to enjoy myself. Programming computers was actually something I had grown to like quite a bit. It wasn't at all like I had pictured it. It was a fascinating challenge, a creative pursuit, and a great hobby. It wasn't really my supreme passion, but it didn't have to be. My computer science degree would allow me to pay the bills and take home some bacon while I pursued my teaching career.

5th Grade Science Fair Project Ideas Made Fun and Easy

For 5th grade science fair projects that are fun, easy and appealing, it is often best to use simple materials and equipment around the house and in stores as well as to apply simple processes. This way, your child will not be intimated by the thought of tackling complex materials and processes that can cause him to back out halfway through the project.

You need not spend plenty of money on buying complex and potentially hazardous materials like chemical substances to make an excellent science fair project. Your child's teacher will even discourage it because safety is always first in science.

Your child can use the measuring spoons and glasses, pots and pans, and even ladles to measure, mix and make your science projects, with the added advantage that he can keep it secret from the rest of the school. Now, contrast that with letting your child do his experiments in the school laboratory. And you can make it fun for him and the rest of the family! Well, of course, your child must do majority of the 5th grade science projects but you can help out, can't you?

For example, in an experiment where wet plaster is dropped from varying heights to predict the size of craters when meteorites fall on the Earth, you can help your child arrive at just the right consistency of the plaster. All you need are water and plaster of Paris and a small box filled with soil.

You have to guide your child, encourage his innate curiosity and build on it for numerous 5th grade science fair projects. You will be surprised at how many questions he has that can be answered with simple demonstrations using simple materials and equipment.

Simple Processes

No matter how simple the process adapted, it must still adhere to the scientific method. This way, your child can be involved from the first to the last step of the scientific process that, in turn, will make him better prepared to present the results of his study.

Keep in mind, however, that the scientific process is not a set of rigid rules. You can be more flexible with the process but within limits since objective observations and results must be made. After all, 5th grade science fair projects are supposed to be fun - not rigid - and easy.

For example, in an experiment where the growth of Venus flytraps are studied, the process can be simplified by confining the variables to just a few number, the hypothesis to just one, and the data collection period to just a few days' time. Thus, only the variable of types of feed is changed, only one hypothesis is made in that the one fed the crickets will grow the fastest because of the protein content, and the period is limited to just 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks.

With 5th grade science fair projects, you can encourage your child to seek more answers to his questions simply because the materials and equipment used are easy to use and the processes adopted are easy to follow.

Science Degree Programs That Lead To Careers Involving The Ocean

A science degree can take some graduates to places they might not have dreamed possible. One of the places that science graduates might work is leagues beneath the sea.

With science degrees in marine biology, for example, students might study plants and animals in the ocean. Marine biologists, in studying living organisms and their relationship to the environment, might carry out their research simply to expand upon human knowledge or to solve a problem.

Many geoscientists and hydrologists help to search for natural resources such as groundwater, minerals, metals, and petroleum. Others work closely with environmental and other scientists to preserve and clean up the environment.

There are also opportunities for students with interests in the marine environment to study toward becoming ocean engineers or underwater filmmakers. Ocean engineers design the equipment, structures, vehicles, and more that are used to study the ocean and its inhabitants. These designs might even include the equipment that underwater filmmakers use to capture life beneath the sea for major motion pictures, educational offerings, and television channels.
